What analog CCTV means
Analog CCTV usually uses coaxial cable from each camera to a DVR. Modern HD analog cameras can give good clarity for many small homes, shops and offices, especially when the cable distance is reasonable and the requirement is straightforward recording and mobile viewing.
Analog can be cost-effective when the site already has usable coaxial cabling or when the customer needs a simple system with limited expansion. It is also easy for many technicians to service because the layout is direct: camera to DVR, DVR to monitor or network.
What IP CCTV means
IP CCTV uses network cameras connected through switches, PoE switches or network cabling. The cameras send digital video over the network to an NVR or server. This gives more flexibility for larger sites, higher resolutions, long-term expansion and better integration with network planning.
IP systems are often better for schools, factories, institutions, apartments, offices and commercial sites where camera count may grow over time. They also make sense when the site already needs a proper network rack, switches, VLAN separation and centralized documentation.
Where analog still makes sense
- Small homes or shops with simple coverage needs.
- Sites with existing coaxial cable in good condition.
- Budgets where basic recording is more important than advanced network features.
- Short cable runs and limited future expansion.
Where IP CCTV is usually better
- Sites with many cameras, multiple buildings or long-term expansion plans.
- Projects that need higher resolution, better analytics or better camera management.
- Locations where CCTV, Wi-Fi, servers and access control should be planned together.
- Installations where structured cabling and rack documentation matter.
Questions to ask before choosing
How many cameras are needed now? How many may be added later? Is the existing cable reliable? Is there a proper rack? Will the cameras share the office network or stay separated? How many days of recording are required? Who will maintain passwords, app access and documentation?
A cheap system that is difficult to maintain can become expensive through repeated visits, unclear recordings and missed evidence. Choose the system that fits the building and support plan, not just the lowest device price.
Quick field rule
Use analog when the job is small, direct and budget-sensitive. Use IP when the site needs scale, cleaner management, better documentation and future expansion.
