GPON/EPON ONU router buying guide for FTTH customers

An ONU router is not the same as a normal Wi-Fi router. It connects directly to the fiber network through a PON port, so compatibility with the service provider matters before purchase.

What PON, GPON and EPON mean

PON means Passive Optical Network. GPON and EPON are common technologies used by fiber internet providers. An ONU or ONT converts the fiber connection into Ethernet, Wi-Fi and sometimes telephone voice output.

Before buying, confirm whether the ISP supports the model and whether the required technology is GPON, EPON or dual-mode. A router can have good specifications and still not work if it is not accepted on the provider network.

Ports to check

  • PON: fiber input from the service provider.
  • GE: Gigabit Ethernet port for higher-speed wired devices.
  • FE: Fast Ethernet port, usually 100 Mbps.
  • FXS: telephone voice port, useful when the plan includes voice service.
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4 GHz 300 Mbps is common for entry-level ONU routers.

When a 300 Mbps ONU router is enough

A 300 Mbps 2.4 GHz ONU router can be enough for basic home or small office browsing, mobile use, billing systems and light Wi-Fi needs. For larger homes, multiple floors or heavy Wi-Fi use, you may still need additional access points or a better Wi-Fi router behind the ONU.

Do not ignore wired planning

If the connection feeds a CCTV recorder, billing computer, network rack or Wi-Fi access point, use the correct Ethernet port and cable. A Gigabit port is useful when the plan speed or local network requirement is higher.

Buyer checklist

  • Confirm ISP compatibility before purchase.
  • Check GPON, EPON or dual-mode support.
  • Match GE/FE ports to your wired device needs.
  • Use proper adapter rating and safe power backup if required.
  • Keep login details and ISP settings documented.
