Network Basics

IP address ranges explained simply: where and when to use them

Most small networks do not need exotic IP planning. They need a clean private range, sensible subnet size, and a clear rule for which devices live where.

The three private IPv4 ranges most people use

  • 10.0.0.0/8 for larger or more segmented environments
  • 172.16.0.0/12 for medium private networks
  • 192.168.0.0/16 for small office, home, and simple CCTV deployments

When a simple 192.168.x.x design is enough

Small offices, homes, and modest CCTV jobs are often fine with a clear /24 network such as 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.10.0/24, provided the installer documents the devices well.

When to separate ranges

  1. Keep CCTV separate when camera count is large
  2. Separate guest Wi-Fi from business devices
  3. Use cleaner segmentation when support and security matter more
For many real sites, clarity beats cleverness. A simple, documented IP plan is usually better than an overcomplicated one nobody can support later.
